Lai Khe was one of the primary base camps of the 1st Infantry Division in Vietnam. Lai Khe is located about 50 kilometers (30 miles) north of Saigon, and during 1969 was the headquarters for Big Red One units including the 1st Battalion / 2nd Infantry, 1st Squadron / 4th Cavalry, 1st Battalion (Mechanized) /16th Infantry, 2nd Battalion /16th Infantry, 1st Battalion / 28th Infantry and 2nd Battalion / 28th Infantry, 2nd Battalion / 33rd Artillery, units of the 1st Aviation Battalion, 1st Engineer Battalion, 121st Signal Battalion, 1st Military Police Company, 701st Maintenance Battalion and the 1st Supply and Transportation Battalion.
